How UK Prize Competitions Work

Last updated 17 June 2026

Online prize competitions have become one of the most popular ways to win cars, tax-free cash and tech in the UK. But how do they actually work, and what makes them legal? Here’s a clear, no-jargon guide.

1. You choose a competition and buy tickets

Each competition has a prize, a ticket price and a set number of tickets. You pick how many tickets you want — more tickets means more entries and a better chance of winning. Ticket prices are typically low, which is what makes prize competitions so accessible compared with buying the prize outright.

2. You answer a skill question

UK law separates a lawful prize competition from an unlawful lottery by requiring an element of skill or knowledge. That’s why you answer a short skill-based question before entering — it’s a genuine condition of entry and applies to every entry, paid or free. Get it wrong and that entry doesn’t qualify for the draw.

3. There’s always a free entry route

To stay fair and lawful, a reputable site always offers a free postal entry route with the same chance of winning as a paid entry. You never have to pay to take part.

4. A winner is drawn — transparently

When the competition closes, a winner is drawn. The best sites use a provably-fair system: a sealed cryptographic commitment is published before sales open and the seed is revealed afterwards, so anyone can verify the winning number was fixed in advance and never changed. Winners are then published openly on the results page.

5. You get your prize

Cash prizes are paid to your account balance and withdrawable to a verified account in your name; physical prizes such as cars and tech are arranged with you directly. You’ll usually be asked to confirm your age and identity first.
